Setting up
your Studio for Surround For recording and editing Surround on your computer, you will need 6 audio outputs. If you are using Mx51 Native, you can use any Windows-compatible soundcard with 6 or more outputs, such as the MOTU 1224. If you are using Mx51 for the Yamaha DSP Factory, you have a number of options. -you can use one AX-44 along with the stereo outputs on the rear of the 2416 -you can use two AX-44's -you can use one AX-88 (made by AdB) -you can use the AX-16 ADAT interface with any multi-i/o including -a Yamaha 01V -an Alesis AI3 You will need a way to control the volume of 6 channels with a single control. One very good unit for this is the "StudioComm for Surround" from Studio Technologies (www.studio-tech.com). It gives you a rack unit for level control, with a separate desktop unit with a volume control knob, as well as solo/mute buttons for each of the 6 channels.
For the Surround studio on a budget, a good option is to get a consumer Surround receiver. These generally have 6 analog inputs and outputs, in addition to the digital input(s). So, you can run 6 channels through the decoder box, and control all of them with a single volume control knob. The receiver has the additional benefit that you can also switch over to the digital input and audition your Surround mix AFTER encoding to DTS or Dolby.
